DNS Information

As you may be aware, Peak10 is currently in the process of renumbering our server addresses in order to become network provider independent. One of the last steps that we need to take to complete that move internally will require the attentions of just about every customer in the center.

The reference ticket number for these changes is 1-CWL4

We need to change the IP addresses that our DNS servers use. In the past few weeks we have rebuilt those servers to allow them to operate with multiple addresses and upgraded the software to ensure that this process moves smoothly and without undue distress.

Please read this carefully as the details are quite important if we are to do this without disruption to networks and users.

DNS Query Only Servers

Systems on the Peak10 network must use the following address for name resolution:

  • 216.26.129.3 [dns-a.Peak10.com]
  • 216.26.128.3 [dns-b.Peak10.com]

Registering new Domain Names

If you are registering new domains for which we will be doing primary and/or secondary please use the following addresses:

  • 216.26.128.1 [ns1.Peak10.com]
  • 216.26.129.1 [ns2.Peak10.com]

Peak10 Providing Secondary DNS Broadcast Services

If you have name servers from which we slave data for broadcast please read all of the following steps:

Ensure that your firewall or network rules allow these addresses as well as the older ones to access your name servers:

  • 216.26.128.1 [ns1.Peak10.com]
  • 216.26.129.1 [ns2.Peak10.com]

Ensure that your name server will allow transfers (AXFR and IXFR) from those same addresses:

  • 216.26.128.1 [ns1.Peak10.com]
  • 216.26.129.1 [ns2.Peak10.com]

Ensure that the zone files for the zones to be slaved include “NS” records for the both servers like this:

  • Domain.ext IN NS ns1.Peak10.com.
  • Domain.ext IN NS ns2.Peak10.com.

If you will be mastering the domain and had requested that we slave the domain only as a secondary server we would like for you to allow both our servers to access your servers. We would further recommend that consider listing both our servers after your server on future domains you purchase and on domains you update. In order to simplify our name server configuration we will be having both machines load every zone and once we are doing this you might as well take advantage of it.

All currently live domain registrations that are listed with ns1.Peak10.com or ns2.Peak10.com will be globally updated in early December. One of the lesser well known aspects of the name registry system allows us to replace all records with those names and update them to the new IP addresses. You might wish to review your domains that we manage and verify that their name server information is correct. At that time, the names of the servers will be switched to return the new IP addresses as canonical.

Done correctly, you should be able to update just about every system without disruption to other services. Servers in the center will need to have their DNS server list updated but that should be a no-reboot under most operating systems. Routers (or firewalls) with NAT and DHCP can be updated transparently and computers in those offices with use the new addresses on their next reboot if not sooner. Open office computers are generally no problem except simply getting to them all.

New zones are easy to create with the new addresses. As long as you configure your name servers and firewalls to allow the new server addresses to transfer you shouldn't have to update the zone files themselves. You may need to reconfigure the name server software so that it will allow the new IP addresses to transfer but that disruption is minimal since most 'named' services can be reconfigured on the fly.
